Frequently Asked Questions

Questions? Conveniently, I Have Answers.

Hiring a freelance health and medical writer isn’t something most people do every Tuesday.

You might want to know how quickly I can turn something around, whether I can work with your existing style guide, what happens if you need revisions, or whether you really have to get on a call before we can work together.

So, I’ve gathered some of the questions I’m asked most often below.

Can’t find yours?

That’s what the contact form is for.

Working With Me

What types of projects do you take on?

Quite a few.

I specialise in health, medical and wellness content, with experience creating everything from individual SEO articles to large-scale healthcare content projects.

Projects I can support include:

  • Health and medical articles
  • Patient education and information
  • HCP-facing content
  • Pharmaceutical and treatment content
  • Website and landing page copy
  • Healthcare SEO content
  • Thought leadership
  • Condition and disease awareness content
  • Medical device communications
  • Content for healthcare sales teams
  • Editing, proofreading and content updates

I also work with clients outside healthcare where the project is a good fit.

Essentially, if it involves complicated information that needs turning into clear, engaging content, there’s a reasonable chance I’ll be interested.

Do you only write health and medical content?

No – although it’s very much my specialist area.

I’ve also written extensively across legal content, veterinary health, dentistry, lifestyle, insurance, e-commerce, consumer products, property and other subjects.

You can see examples over in my portfolio.

Who do you work with?

I work with organisations of all shapes and sizes, including healthcare brands, publishers, agencies, pharmacies, medical device and pharmaceutical companies, clinics, charities and other businesses.

Sometimes I’m brought in for a single piece of content. Sometimes I become an ongoing extension of an internal team.

Both are welcome.

Do you work with healthcare agencies?

Absolutely.

I’m used to slotting into existing agency workflows and working with account managers, strategists, designers, editors, medical reviewers and other stakeholders.

I can also support agencies when workloads suddenly become less “nicely under control” and more “why are there 27 briefs in this folder?”

Can you write for healthcare professionals as well as patients?

While I have extensive experience writing patient and consumer health information, I also create content for HCPs, healthcare sales teams and other professional audiences.

The important part is understanding who I’m writing for and adapting the terminology, level of clinical detail, assumptions and tone accordingly.

Can you work with regulated healthcare content?

Yes.

I’ve worked on pharmaceutical, medical device, pharmacy and other healthcare projects where content needs to align with clinical, brand and regulatory requirements.

I’m comfortable working from materials such as PILs, SmPCs, clinical guidelines, approved claims and existing reference packs, as well as responding to medical, legal and regulatory feedback.

I won’t, however, pretend to be your regulatory or medical signatory. Final approval remains with the appropriate qualified people within your organisation.

The Practical Stuff

What’s your typical turnaround time?

It depends on the project and what else is already booked into my calendar.

For many projects, I aim to return work within around 14 days, but we’ll agree on a deadline before work begins so everybody knows what’s happening.

Larger projects, content batches and ongoing retainers will usually have their own delivery schedules.

If you have an urgent deadline, ask. I can’t promise I’ll have availability, but it’s always worth checking.

What information do you need before starting?

A good brief makes everybody’s life easier, but you don’t need to arrive with a 17-page document and colour-coded spreadsheet.

Depending on the project, useful information might include:

  • The purpose of the content
  • Target audience
  • Word count or scope
  • Tone of voice
  • SEO requirements
  • Reference requirements
  • Style guides
  • Examples of existing content
  • Required internal links or CTAs
  • Clinical or regulatory materials
  • Deadline

If you’re not entirely sure what you need yet, that’s fine too. We can work it out.

Do I need to book a discovery call?

Nope.

I offer free discovery calls because sometimes talking through a project is considerably easier than sending 14 emails backwards and forwards.

But if you’d rather communicate entirely in writing, that’s absolutely fine.

You can simply send me your project details through my contact form.

No compulsory Zoom small talk required.

Do you offer retainers or ongoing support?

Yes.

I work on both one-off projects and ongoing arrangements.

Retainers can work particularly well for organisations and agencies that need a reliable amount of content each month or want freelance support they can call on consistently.

If you’re not ready for a retainer, that’s fine. In fact, I generally recommend working together on a smaller project first so we can make sure we’re a good fit before making things more official.

Can you handle large content projects?

Yes – and I rather enjoy them.

I’ve worked on projects involving substantial libraries of interconnected content, large batches of articles and multi-channel campaigns.

For larger projects, I’ll usually agree milestones and delivery dates with you upfront so neither of us reaches week six wondering what on earth is happening.

Research, Accuracy & Medical Content

How do you research health and medical content?

Carefully.

I prioritise authoritative and up-to-date sources appropriate to the project, which can include:

  • Clinical guidelines
  • Peer-reviewed studies
  • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • Government and public health organisations
  • Professional medical organisations
  • Prescribing information
  • PILs and SmPCs
  • Client-supplied clinical and regulatory materials

I don’t simply find a source that agrees with the sentence I want to write and call it a day.

The aim is to understand what the evidence actually supports – including where uncertainty exists.

Are you a doctor?

No.

I’m a professional health and medical content writer, not a healthcare professional, and I think that distinction matters.

My expertise lies in researching medical subjects, interpreting reliable evidence and communicating complicated information clearly to different audiences.

Where content requires clinical approval, I expect it to be reviewed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

How do you make medical information accessible without oversimplifying it?

By simplifying the language, not the information.

Good patient communication isn’t about removing every complicated detail until there’s barely anything useful left. It’s about understanding which information matters, explaining unfamiliar concepts properly and structuring it in a way readers can follow.

In short: plain English, not dumbed-down English.

Can you work from scientific papers and clinical evidence?

Yes.

Reading research is a significant part of my work, and I’m comfortable working with journal articles, systematic reviews, clinical guidelines and other scientific sources.

I can then adapt that evidence for patients, consumers, HCPs or other audiences depending on what the project requires.

Writing, SEO & Brand Voice

Can you write in UK and US English?

Yes.

I’m British, so UK English comes naturally, but I’ve spent years writing predominantly for international and North American audiences and am equally comfortable working in US English.

I can also follow client-specific terminology and style requirements.

Just tell me which version you need before I start, otherwise colour/color may become unnecessarily controversial.

Can you follow our existing style guide?

Please send it my way.

I’ve worked with everything from very detailed editorial guidelines to approximately three sentences explaining that the client wants to sound “friendly but authoritative”.

I can adapt to established tone-of-voice, terminology, formatting, referencing and editorial requirements so the finished content feels like your brand, not mine.

Do you write SEO content?

Yes.

I have extensive experience creating SEO-led content and hold additional certifications in SEO and content strategy.

I can work from an existing SEO brief or incorporate requirements such as primary and secondary keywords, search intent, headings, FAQs, metadata and internal linking.

But the reader still comes first.

Nobody wants to read a paragraph that contains “best healthcare content writer” seven times, including me.

Can you optimise or update existing content?

Yes.

Not every piece of content needs throwing away and starting again.

I can review, update, rewrite, expand or optimise existing content to improve things such as accuracy, readability, structure, SEO, tone or alignment with current guidance.

Money, Revisions & Admin

How much do you charge?

It depends on what you need.

Pricing varies according to the scope, complexity, research requirements, format, turnaround time and volume of work involved.

Once I understand your project, I’ll provide a quote so you know what it will cost before we begin.

No mysterious invoice maths later.

Do you charge per word?

No.

Word count is useful for defining scope, but it doesn’t always reflect the amount of work involved.

A highly technical 800-word medical page requiring extensive research and regulatory considerations is a very different project from a straightforward 800-word lifestyle blog.

I therefore prefer to price based on the project and work involved, rather than treating every word as though it requires exactly the same amount of expertise.

What payment methods do you accept?

I accept bank transfers into my UK and US bank accounts.

I don’t currently accept cheques or PayPal.

Are revisions included?

Yes. Reasonable revisions relating to the agreed brief are part of the process.

If I’ve misunderstood something or you need changes following editorial feedback, we’ll get it sorted.

If the brief changes substantially after I’ve written the content, that’s a different matter and may require an additional fee.

Otherwise, I’d technically be offering unlimited writing via the medium of increasingly creative revision requests.

Do you offer unpaid writing tests?

No.

I’ve been writing professionally for years and have an extensive portfolio, case studies and client testimonials available to demonstrate the quality of my work.

If you need a bespoke test piece before committing to a larger project, I’m happy to discuss completing one as a paid trial.

Before You Hire Me

Can you provide writing samples?

Absolutely.

You can explore published examples in my medical and healthcare portfolio and blog and content writing portfolio.

I also have case studies showing the thinking and process behind larger projects.

Because some of my work is ghostwritten, confidential or completed through agencies, not everything I’ve written can appear publicly. If you’re looking for experience in a particular area, ask me and I’ll let you know what I can share.

Can you provide references or testimonials?

I’ve collected plenty of lovely words from previous clients and editors over the years.

You can read them on my testimonials page.

And yes, they’re considerably less biased than anything I could write about myself.

What if my project isn’t exactly like anything in your portfolio?

Get in touch anyway.

A huge part of freelance medical writing involves getting to grips with unfamiliar subjects quickly and thoroughly.

My portfolio shows you where I’ve been.

It doesn’t necessarily define where I can go next.

Still Have a Question?

I did my best.

But unless I turn this page into Frequently, Occasionally and Extremely Specifically Asked Questions, I probably haven’t covered everything.

If there’s something you want to know about my experience, availability, pricing or whether I’m the right writer for a particular project, get in touch.

You can book a free discovery call if you’d like to talk it through, or send me the details through my contact form if you’d rather keep things in writing.
