Setting Boundaries: The Non-Negotiables in My Client Contracts

When you hire me, you’re not just getting words on a page but a professional partnership built on clarity, respect, and trust. My contracts include a set of non-negotiable boundaries that protect both of us and ensure every project runs smoothly.

When you choose to work with me, my goal is simple: to make the process straightforward, collaborative, and enjoyable. The best way to do that is by setting clear expectations from the start.

That’s why my contracts include some non-negotiables. They’re not there to trip anyone up: they’re there to make sure we’re always on the same page. With everything written down clearly, you’ll always know what to expect, and I’ll have the structure I need to give you my best work.

Defining Boundaries in Client Contracts

Here’s how these boundaries work in your favour as a client:

  • Clear Expectations: You’ll know exactly what’s included in the project and what’s not, so there’s no confusion later on.
  • No Scope Creep Surprises: If you need something beyond the agreed project, we can add it on fairly, instead of it being an awkward afterthought.
  • Reasonable Revision Limits: You get the chance to refine the work, but without endless back-and-forth that delays your goals.
  • Communication Clarity: You know the best way to reach me, when to expect replies, and how to keep feedback streamlined.
  • Fair Payment Terms: Deadlines for invoices, late-fee policies, and kill-fee clauses mean you’re working with someone who treats this as a professional business.
  • Protection for Both Sides: Whether it’s rush fees for last-minute requests or content use and credit rules, the contract keeps things transparent.
  • Trust and Professionalism: A structured process reassures you that I’m reliable, consistent, and serious about delivering value.

The Importance of Setting Boundaries With Clients

Boundaries aren’t just for me: they’re for you too. Read on to learn why they matter to our working relationship.

Protects My Time & Energy (and Improves the Work You Receive)

By avoiding overwork, I can dedicate focused time to your project. That means you get my best, most creative ideas, rather than work delivered in a rush.

Promotes Mutual Respect

Contracts make it clear we both respect each other’s time, effort, and expertise. This sets the tone for a healthy, collaborative relationship.

Prevents Scope Creep

When the project is clearly defined, you know what’s included and can make informed decisions if you’d like to expand the scope. No hidden costs, no frustration: just transparency.

Improves Communication

You’ll never be left wondering how to reach me or when you’ll hear back. Clear communication guidelines keep things efficient and stress-free.

Builds Trust & Professionalism

You can feel confident knowing you’ve hired someone who values structure, clarity, and accountability.

Creates Space for Better Work

By managing my workload, I can give each project (including yours) the time and attention it deserves.

Supports Long-Term Relationships

Healthy boundaries mean I can work with clients sustainably. That makes it far more likely we’ll collaborate again in the future, because both of us walk away happy.

What is in My Contracts?

Here are the key clauses you’ll find in my agreements, and why they help both of us.

Project Scope

I outline exactly what’s included (e.g., three blog posts of ~1,200 words each) and what isn’t (e.g., social captions or uploading to a CMS). This prevents misunderstandings and makes it easy to adjust if you need more. If you need more, we can add it on easily without confusion.

Turnaround Times

You’ll always know when to expect delivery. My standard turnaround is seven business days from assignment, unless we agree otherwise in writing.

Number of Revisions

I include two rounds of revisions in every project. This gives you time to refine things without the process dragging on endlessly. Extra rounds can always be added if needed.

Communication Expectations

All communication takes place via email, and I respond within 24-48 hours during business hours (my working hours are Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm UK time).

Rush Fees

If you need a project turned around urgently (under 48 hours), I can prioritise it – but it will come with a rush fee of 25%. This way, you’re guaranteed fast delivery without compromising on quality.

Late Payment Penalties

Invoices are due within 14 days. If payment is late, I will exercise my statutory right to claim interest (at 8% over the Bank of England base rate) and compensation for debt recovery costs under the Late Payment legislation. This keeps cashflow clear and predictable for both of us.

Content Use & Credit

We’ll be clear upfront whether the content is ghostwritten or published under my name. Either way, you get content you can confidently share with your audience.

Kill Fee Clause

If you decide to cancel a project after I’ve started, a 50% kill fee applies. It’s a fair way to value the time I’ve invested while giving you flexibility.

Plagiarism & Accuracy Disclaimer

I commit to providing original, fact-checked work based on reputable sources. For health or legal-related topics, I also include a note that you’re responsible for final legal or medical review, so everything is fully aligned with your needs.

Availability Limits

I only take on a set number of projects each month. This ensures your work gets the time and focus it deserves. Projects are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.

Final Thoughts

Boundaries might sound rigid, but they actually make our collaboration smoother. They reduce stress, prevent misunderstandings, and create the conditions for high-quality work.

When you hire me, you’re not just paying for words; you’re investing in a process that’s structured, respectful, and built to deliver results. With everything agreed upfront, there’s no second-guessing, no awkward surprises, and no stress. It’s about creating a partnership where we both feel respected, supported, and excited about the work we’re doing together.
